Meet Stewart. Stewart is a two year old male Weimaraner we took in from the San Diego County Animal Shelter in July 2015. As of this writing, Stewart is still battling hemolytic anemia and treatment is ongoing, one day at a time. Due to his current state of health, Stewart is not available for adoption, but we continue to seek your well wishes, happy thoughts, and any dollars and cents you have to spare. 12/28/2015: Stewart continues to do well with his daily medications. If all goes well, we'll try again in January 2016 to taper down his doses with the hopes that Stewart can live a happy, normal life. :) 11/4/2015 NOON: Stewy is at his foster mom's house. He is eating, going potty and snored all night. He is still very lethargic, on several medications, but his gums are a very pale pink, which is better than gray (but could be better). We are not out of the woods yet; only time will tell. Keep rooting for this boy to make a full and speedy recovery. Thank you for your words and prayers. We all feel them. 11/3/2015 1:00 PM: We've checked out of the VCA, finally standing, and licking our chops like we're hungry. Back to the vet at 2:00 pm for another PCV check. 11/3/2015 8:30 AM: We made it overnight. !!!! PCV levels went up from 13% to 18%. Not out of the woods, but making improvement. We'll take it. 11/2/2015 3:30 PM: The CBC Panel has completed; the hematocrit is low and reticulocytes are high. In English, it looks like we're headed down a tough path again. Meds are going back UP to full dose immediately. For now, Stewart is back in foster care where he will be monitored CLOSELY for any signs of bleeding (which means another transfusion will be required). We're not out of the woods, so keep the happy thoughts coming. Xoxo 11/2/2015 9:30 AM: Little Stew isn't feeling well today and could use some happy thoughts. We're rushing him to the vet this morning and keeping our fingers crossed that tests come back okay. Background: Stewart is a 1-2 year old gray boy who came to CalWEAR this summer from the San Diego shelter with a diagnosis of hemolytic anemia. In the last four months, he has had four blood transfusions and is on a steady dose of Prednisone to keep his system in check. We'rehoping that within the next couple of months, he can be weaned off of Pred entirely and be healthy enough to find the furever home he so very much deserves. 8/25/2015: Stewart's latest CBC shows improvement! We've begun the slow tapering process for his prednisone and are keeping our fingers crossed that he continues to do well. For those of you who wish to help us off-set the costs of Stewart's multiple blood transfusions, you can make a contribution to our PayPal account, here. 7/27/2015: On Sunday, #teamstewart of the CalWEAR gang met up 1/2 way with Stewart's Dr. for a roadside blood draw so his RBC count could be checked. We are happy to report that they are moving in the right direction. Looks like we managed to capture the healing light the CalWEAR family is sending. Special thanks to Dr. Goodell and the team at Bay Animal Hospital for caring for these babies!!!
And - Thank you for your good energy and support! 7/25/2015: This sweet boy is out of the hospital after a blood transfusion and is resting comfortably in his foster home. 7/24/2015: Two blood transfusions, check. Numbers back to stable, check. Busted out of the hospital today, check. Lunching with his transporter, check! Thank you all for the well wishes!!!! Another one saved this week.
With love and gratitude, Team CalWEAR. Xo 7/20/2015: Please keep Stewart, our other special needs boy, in your thoughts this afternoon. Stewart declined rapidly overnight and will likely need another blood transfusion to get through the next 24-48 hours. When it rains, it pours. Much appreciated. - Team CalWEAR
